Casa Rio

Casa Rio

Casa Rio is an artist residency space that belongs to the State of Rio de Janeiro and is run by People’s Palace Projects do Brasil.

Created in 2015 with the support of the Queen Mary University of London, the Casa Rio aims to promote intercultural exchanges with the rest of the world and particularly with England.

« We always like to make sure that we have Brazilian artists here as well as international artists. {…} This is a place really of encounter, so what we offer is that encounter with the city of Rio, and hope that this will inspire artists », indicates Paul Heritage, Director of People’s Palace Projects.

The house is a very polyvalent space that has few rooms for the residents, co-working spaces, and an exhibition space used for performances, theatre plays, and all kinds of events.

« What also defines this space is that each activity must live with the others. We try to run the space so it may be shared by different persons, which happens to bring a lot of people rather organically to us » explains Virginia Rigot-Muller, Manager of the space.

Indeed, Casa Rio has a really dynamic program that, since it opened its doors, welcomes around 60 artists by year from all disciplines.

« It’s great to be able to show what people can do with their creativity, {…} to be able to have a space where people can meet and think new things and be creative » concludes Raquel Roldanus Dias, General Manager of PPP do Brasil.
